We were employed by the builder of this project after being recommended by the architect to fully design and install a complete smart home system. The system had to be ultra reliable and very intuitive for the owners of this superb new home.
We met with the owners of the house to discuss their requirements, as is usually the case they did not have an exact specification or equipment list that they required but they knew roughly what they wanted to achieve and had high expectations. We used our extensive knowledge of AV products and lighting control to design, install and program a system that would not only live up to but exceed their expectations.
It was decided that each person in the house would have access to their own Sky HD box, DVD player and iPod dock in whichever room they were in. This meant that no one would interfere with a programme that someone else was watching and also meant that if a member of the house had recorded a programme in one room they could then play it back in any other. TV screens were installed in most rooms of the house including the main bathroom and the swimming pool area which used fully waterproof versions. Speakers were also fitted in rooms that didn’t have screens like the dining room, Study and even the Garden where we installed fantastic sounding speakers disguised as rocks.
The obvious choice of control system for a house of this size and complexity was Crestron. The Crestron system makes some of the extremely complex operations involved extremely easy for the end user. In wall touch panels were installed in most rooms to allow each person to choose there own TV, Movie or music when they enter the room. The touch panels also control lighting and allow for the main gate entry camera to be displayed on them with full speech communication with a visitor at the gate. The main bedrooms have remote controls to supplement the touch panels this allows for control of the system when in bed. A master 8" colour touch panel in the lounge controls the 60" plasma screen which is flush mounted into the fire place along with the Artcoustic surround sound system. This touch panel also gives control of all of the other rooms in the house and allows all of the AV equipment and lighting in the house to be turned off from the touch of one button, this is a really handy feature for when you leave the house or go to bed.
And finally, no house of this size would be complete without its very own state of the art home cinema room. We installed the system in a purpose built space above the House's linked garage. The cinema boasts a 7ft wide fixed screen coupled with a high quality projector and surround sound system. All of the source equipment from the main house is viewable in here along with a PS3 for incredible gaming and the latest must have piece of technology the Kaleidescape system.
The Kaleidescape system allows the owner to store their entire DVD collection onto one server and play movies simultaneously in as many rooms of the house as they wish. The system is extremely fun and intuitive to use and allows DVD’s to be searched in a variety of ways including by cover art, title, actor, director, year etc. The system can suggest other similar movies to the one you have searched for and when you have decided what to watch most DVD's can be played directly from the begging of the movie skipping the annoying DVD menus and FBI warnings.
